History of Toad Van 17410

Built at Swindon in 1940, this van was one of a batch of 100 financed by the War Department, but taken straight into GWR stock. The van’s former owners decided to donate the vehicle to the Charitable Trust to secure its future, and 17410 has become one of the first goods wagons in the Trust’s collection. The decision to donate the van included support from the late Don Wilcox’s family. Don had had a long history with the SVR from its earliest days, and his name had long been associated with this van.

The Toad has had a hard life since it came to the SVR in 1970 for preservation by the '17410 Fund'. Its original purpose was to provide overnight accommodation for volunteers. It later saw many years of regular use by the Permanent Way Department. Eventually it became surplus to operational needs was languishing in Bewdley Yard, gently rusting and rotting away, until the volunteers of the LNER Carriage Group stepped in to save the day.

The Trust’s objective, in collaboration with the LNER Carriage Group, is to return 17410 to its operational condition in appropriate GWR livery, not ruling out BR Bauxite as a future possibility.
